In 2017, the Cancer Institute became one of only a few U.S. systems to earn the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer accreditation. For all of our patients, a dedicated team of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, clinical researchers, technicians and others collaborate to provide the exact course of care they need. For patients coming through our doors with a cancer diagnosis, that means three things: standardized care, more options and more hope. Our programs and outreach efforts continue to support Hartford HealthCare's mission to provide access to high-quality health services and positively impact our communities. We advance HHC's health equity goals through the promotion of cancer prevention, education and screening. We are able to provide critical services to our medically underserved neighbors throughout our state. Our colorectal cancer screening program has grown tremendously in the past year. We screened over 1,100 men and women for colorectal cancer through the use of home FIT kits in 2024 and were able to provide 29 diagnostic colonoscopies at no charge to patients enrolled in the program. We are proud to have developed a comprehensive outreach program spanning the state, attending nearly 150 events and engaging nearly 3,000 community members with cancer screenings and cancer prevention education in 2024. Also in 2024, we provided 133 prostate screenings at community events through our partnership with Quest Diagnostics and Tallwood Men's Health.The HHC Breast and Cervical Early Detection and Prevention Program screened 1,752 individuals for breast and cervical cancer in 2024, detecting 12 breast cancers and six cervical cancers. Since 2015, the program has enabled 118 women to receive early detection of breast cancer and 30 women to receive early detection of cervical cancer. Our patient demographics indicate that nearly all (99.76%) of the participants lack health insurance, and a majority (73%) of the women are Hispanic. These statistics have remained constant over the past two years. Mobile Mammography: Despite the challenges of an aging mobile mammography van, the number of completed mammograms continues to rise, reaching 1,777 in 2024, a 70% increase over the past two years. 60% of the mammograms completed were for women who lacked health insurance.The five most common types of cancer diagnosed by teams of specialists at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute are cancers of the bladder, breast, colon, lung and prostate. The Connecticut Orthopedic Institute (COI) at St. Vincent's Medical Center proudly maintains an exceptional level of care and an outstanding patient experience. The Institute is staffed by some of the top orthopedic specialists in the region through a partnership with Connecticut Orthopedic Specialists and Comprehensive Orthopedics and Musculoskeletal Care. The surgeons, and their patients, also have access to the best-available robotics-assisted technology, Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery for knees and hips, and Mazor X Robotic Spine Surgery for the spine. The Mazor X Robotic Spine Surgery makes a procedure less invasive and more precise. For our patients, that means a quick recovery and restored function of your knee, hip, or spine. Conditions treated include but are not limited to: Arthritis; Degenerative Joint Disease, Hand/Repetitive Motion; Hip; Knee; Osteoporosis; Shoulder; and Spine. St. Vincent's Medical Center continues its mission of carrying on the work of the Daughters of Charity and their commitment to serve the sick and poor of Bridgeport. St. Vincent's, with more than 3,500 associates, includes a licensed 520-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and St. Vincent's Special Needs Services. The Medical Center offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient services with regional centers of excellence in cardiology, surgery, cancer care, orthopedics, family birthing, behavioral health, and an array of specialized services.The Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care contains all oncology services in one place. These services encompass the full spectrum of cancer care and include community outreach, screening and prevention, diagnostic services, surgical and medical oncology, radiation therapy, interventional oncology, clinical trials, dedicated inpatient and outpatient cancer units, palliative care, pain management, integrative oncology, support services, patient and provider education and survivorship. The Center offers integrative oncology services, including a boutique, spa services, nutrition counseling, social work, financial counseling, a meditation area, support services and a survivorship program.Through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, the City of Bridgeport, and the Connecticut Health Foundation, St. Vincent's developed and launched a pilot community health worker (CHW) program in 2022. The embedded CHWs use cultural connectedness to the community to promote, maintain and improve the health of underserved residents and their families. In addition, St. Vincent's launched bi-weekly mobile food distribution with CT Foodshare, implemented the Waste Not Want Not food rescue program, added four minority vendors and served more than 300 patients at the annual Medical Mission at Home.In 2022 St. Vincent's, through a collaboration between the Ayer Neuroscience and Connecticut Orthopedic institutes, became one of six hospitals in the country to receive Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery by The Joint Commission. The hospital also saw improved quality reporting scores, including achieving and sustaining a Leapfrog "B and U.S. News high-performing standards in five conditions. St. Vincent's applied to the American Nurses Credentialing Center for recertification of its Magnet designation.
