In 2024, adventist healthcare fort washington medical center (FWMC), an acute care hospital in southern prince george's county, MD, provided medical and surgical services to the community. In addition, they provided benefits to the community that included, charity care, community health education, community sponsorship opportunities, and community engagement activities.continues on schedule o.an exciting milestone occurred in may 2024 when FWMC received national recognition for patient safety. The hospital earned an "a" hospital safety grade from the leapfrog group, a national nonprofit organization, and became the only hospital in prince george's county to earn such distinction. This accomplishment reflects the commitment and hard work of the entire FWMC team. The leapfrog hospital safety grade, updated twice annually in the fall and spring, is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries, which account for more than 500 patient deaths per day in the united states. Safety grades are peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.FWMC also had the distinct honor and privilege to host a press conference on behalf of, then, prince george's county executive angela alsobrooks. She shared that $10 million in state funding was secured for FWMC which is an important step toward funding the construction of our new hospital facility. The hospital continued its certified nursing assistant (cna) practicum for local high school students. The program allows students to earn required clinical cna hours - 40 hours of real-world, hands-on clinical experience - prior to graduation. The goal is to offer the students employment right out of high school upon completion of their cna certification. Hospital leadership supported the opening of the dyer care center, a crisis support facility in prince george's county. The center is the first of its kind to provide short-term personalized emergency care for adults who are experiencing behavioral health and/or substance use trouble. In addition, the hospital was active in the community, hosting a series of community conversations and participating in events throughout the year including farmers markets and church events. Free blood pressure screenings were administered at these community events and health information was distributed. These events also allow the hospital team an opportunity to solicit feedback on the services community members would like to see the hospital provide patients. Hospital leadership also inspired young scholars at multiple career day events at local public schools and on our own campus. Students received hands-on learning about the importance of performing CPR during an emergency and learned about different career paths available in a hospital. FWMC maintains relationships with local schools by participating in events and hosting holiday toy and canned good drives to support families in our area and encourage young students to pursue careers in the medical field.
