The foundation was created as a result of the june 1, 2017 sale of ohio valley medical center ("ovmc") and east ohio regional hospital ("eorh") to alecto, a for-profit health care system. Therefore, the foundation was created to carry out the charitable outreach activities of the former not- for-profit ovmc and eorh. On march 19, 2018, the foundation was designated by the internal revenue service as a tax-exempt non-profit 501(c) (3) public charity. Therefore, most of the 2017 and early 2018 calendar years involved working on making the appropriate steps to rename and reclassify the foundation. From 2019 - 2022, the foundation awarded annual grants in order to assure community needs for healthcare and healthcare education are met. In 2023, the organization established the river valley health foundation fund with the community foundation for the ohio valley and continues to work towards its mission through both this organization and the fund at the community foundation. The mission of this foundation is to improve the health and well-being of the residents of the ohio valley.
