Founded as a regional women's fund in 1996, the women's foundation of alabama is the state's only public women's foundation applying a gender lens to grantmaking, research, and advocacy.

Grantmakingin 2024, the women's foundation of alabama strengthened its position as the state's leading philanthropic organization advancing women's economic opportunity. Through its competitive statewide grantmaking cycle, the foundation supported programs that remove barriers to employment and increase access to education and workforce pathways.

Advancing alabama child care accelerator in addition to competitive grantmaking, the foundation invests in strategic initiatives to elevate women and families on the path to economic mobility. The student parent success model, now implemented in eleven community colleges, provides career-specific training combined with child care, transportation, and individualized coaching to help student parents complete programs leading to stable employment. Also, women's foundation of alabama launched the advancing alabama child care accelerator in spring 2024 aiming to support center-based and home-based child care providers in starting or expanding high-quality, thriving child care businesses that meet the needs of working families in alabama. Together, these initiatives served more than 8,000 women and girls statewide, contributing to measurable gains in education, employment, and economic mobility.

Advocacyto address gender inequities, wfa leverages public policy advocacy as a strategic tool for change because we know that philanthropy alone is not enough. To shift the paradigm from charity to justice, wfa championed nonpartisan common sense policy solutions supporting women's economic opportunity. Our 2024 agenda for women urged alabama lawmakers to advance equity through workplace supports and maternal health. Informed by our research, our agenda focused on what women need to enter and remain in the workforce: childcare, maternal health, and workforce opportunities. We were successful in increasing state investments to scale proven workforce development models, expand funding for childcare, safe-guarding the investment to the maternal mortality review and continued funding for the postpartum medicaid coverage.
