Sustainable agrifood systems (sas)the sustainable agrifood systems deliver food security and nutrition for all - without compromising the economic, social and environmental bases - for generations to come. This leads to better and resilient production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all.cimmyt's sustainable agrifood systems work includes discovery and development, to meet a multiplicity of goals: enhance resilience through agricultural production, profit, environmental services, social and human condition.(continued in schedule o) research and activities are carried out in close collaboration with partners, and directly support the cimmyt 2030 strategy.six principles guide our work:-strong commitment to working with local, national and international partners.-living labs that include long-term field experimentation platforms, linked to participatory on-farm research and extension that enhances stakeholder capacity and farmer agency.-documentation and sharing of knowledge generated through publications, curricula, agricultural advisory tools and recommendations, social media and more.-commitment to open data, through the generation, documentation and sharing of data following fair principles, appropriate metadata and open protocols.-scaling sustainable agriculture through innovation hub networks and public-private-civil partnerships for inclusive, demand-driven value chains.-impact pathways that promote public policies for agrifood systems that are inclusive, resilient and that address climate change.we live in a rapidly changing world. Food security is threatened by extreme climate events, price spikes, disruptions of global supply chains, and new pests and diseases.to address these challenges in an agile way, cimmyt conducts research on sustainable agrifood systems and implements projects through both cross-cutting and regional teams.cross-cutting teamscimmyt tools include crop and system modeling, farming systems, big data, geographic information systems, remote sensing and pest prediction, foresight analysis, panel surveys, socioeconomic gender-aware modeling, seed system feedback loops, inclusive value chains and participatory research.-climate change adaptation for nutrition-climate change science-data services-demand-driven seed systems-foresight and ex-ante-inclusive value chains-monitoring and adoption-science for scalingregional teamssmallholder farming systems are diverse and complex. To promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, cimmyt collaborates with national agricultural research and extension organizations, as well as other partners across the value chain, from farmers to companies. Cimmyt's priorities and approaches are co-developed with stakeholders by region and country, in support of:-systems science (africa, latin america, south asia)-innovations for development (africa, latin america, south asia)-partnerships (africa, latin america, south asia)

Science and innovation chapterthe science and innovation chapter has expanded and integrated within the cimmyt science and innovation structure: it includes a portfolio of projects, which have a broad food systems approach and use resources and capacities across all cimmyt research programs and executed under leadership of the chief science and innovation officer (cso) and/or managed through the DG-office or regional directors. For 2024, major projects under the science and innovation chapter include (but are not limited to) the sustainable agri food systems approach project for sudan (sasas) and funder contributions from the government of mexico. The sasas project takes a modular and multi-crop approach, (continued in schedule o)implementing an integrated agrifood system that supports food security, employment, and equity. The project focuses on soil fertility management integrated with agrifood systems based on smallholder farmer productivity gains, leveraging both one cgiar and non-cgiar innovation partners to support scaling on the ground by last-mile partners.

Global maize program (GMP)cimmyt develops and distributes improved maize inbred lines and hybrids to partners worldwide. This work improves the food security, incomes and livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers and their families in the tropics and subtropics of africa, asia, and latin america.the objectives of cimmyt's maize breeding and seed systems work are to:-develop genetically diverse, high-yielding maize inbred lines and hybrids, combining multiple-stress tolerance, nutrient use efficiency, enhanced nutritional quality, and desirable seed production properties for target production zones.(continued in schedule o)-accelerate the rate at which the genetic potential for maize yields increases each year and improve the efficiency of maize breeding operations, through integrated application of modern tools and technologies.-deploy cimmyt-derived improved maize varieties in the tropics through public-private partnerships, while strengthening local maize seed production and delivery systems.-build local capacity - particularly of women and youth - in maize breeding and seed systems through training and knowledge exchange.cimmyt's maize breeding work aims at developing easy-to-produce, best-bet hybrids, elite maize lines, and improved open-pollinated varieties, as well as science-based recommendations for varietal targeting and improved productivity in target regions.in addition to higher grain yield, cimmyt's maize breeding teams focus on:-yield stability in stress-prone environments, through tolerance to drought, heat, and poorly fertile soils.-resistance to major diseases, insect pests, and parasitic weeds.-enhanced nutritional qualities, such as provitamin a, high-kernel zinc, and quality protein maize.
