The community fund and designations - through united way of york county's annual campaign, donors can designate their contribution to the community fund. During the past year, funding was provided to 65 programs of 37 partner agencies through the community fund in areas of education, health, and financial stability. United way of york county receives program applications from partner agencies which were reviewed and assessed by trained community volunteers to ensure they demonstrate measurable results. United way of york county also allocates funds for special one-time projects and new programs of partner agencies. Applications for these programs are also reviewed by volunteers and with united way of york county's board of directors who approve the actual funding levels. As part of united way of york county's annual fundraising campaign, donors are also able to designate their contribution to qualified organizations exempt under 501(c)(3). This service is provided as a convenience to our donors. Organizations receiving designations are not required to submit information relative to the use and results of these contributions. We continue to transition to an issue-focused organization and have announced our new focus areas will be to reduce barriers in childcare, transportation and financial wellness for the asset limited, income constrained, employed (alice) population.

The childcare focus area supports york county families in their journey towards finding affordable quality early learning experiences for their children, by providing scholarships to families and grants to early childhood education (ece) centers. To qualify for a scholarship, the parent(s) of the student(s) must either reside or be employed by a company located in york county. There must be one person employed full-time in the household. The student must be a resident of pennsylvania. An eligible student is a child 6 weeks through 5 years of age. If a scholarship recipient turns 6 years of age during the period of the award, the scholarship will be awarded through the month of the child's sixth birthday. The child must attend an approved program and be a member of a household with an annual household income of not more than $100,000. To qualify for an early childhood education center grant, the ece center must have a keystone quality star rating of 3 or 4 as determined by the pennsylvania office of child development and early learning and hold an active operating license with the pennsylvania department of human services. They must be a 501c3 non-profit organization registered in the state of pennsylvania. The transportation focus area addresses transportation as a barrier to employment and will provide ride united micro grants and transportation innovation grants, and will establish a transportation access coalition. The ride united micro grants will be made in collaboration with united way worldwide, and will provide alice families with transportation support like rideshare vouchers, gas cards and bus passes. Transportation innovation grants will accept grant applications for transformative transportation solutions for alice households in york county, pa. The transportation access coalition has been convened by united way of york county to pave the way for the long-term investments required to make systematic improvements.

The financial wellness focus area includes volunteer income tax assistance (vita) and united for financial fitness. Vita is a free program for any low-to-moderate income york county, pa resident. Clients can visit a vita site to have their tax return filed by a trained volunteer. United for financial fitness offers free budgeting and credit seminars to help alice maximize their income.
